If Terrell Owens was unhappy that his streak of 185 consecutive games with a catch ended on Sunday, he kept his anger in check. A little.

Owens gave short and dismissive answers to reporters after the Bills lost 27-7 to New Orleans, the first game in which he didn’t have a reception since his rookie year in 1996.

After the game, he did not criticize his teammates or coaches, but his discontent was evident. “I’m just going with the plays that are called,” Owens said.

NBC analyst Tony Dungy, the former Colts coach, acknowledged on the network that Owens’ unhappiness could become an issue.

“That’s hard to coach,” Dungy said.

Fellow NBC analyst Rodney Harrison went further, however, and reiterated that he thinks Owens is “a clown.”

“He’s more concerned with his own stats than the team’s success,” Harrison said.

Owens responded on Twitter by rebuking and taunting Harrison about the former Patriots safety’s suspension in 2007 for violating the performance-enhancing substances policy.

From Owens’ Twitter account:

“I could less about Rodney Harrison! Anybody tht using steroids, yes STEROIDS rodney, is a cheater & cheated the game! … Is tht Y u used steroids b/c u were worried about ur stats or ws it b/c u were losing it? Lol! U’re a loser & a cheater? Got any steroid … Hey rodney! Send me sum steroids 2 the Bills facility next week!”

Owens would not reveal if he is unhappy with the Bills’ play-calling

“Whether I like them or don’t, I’m just going with the plays that are called.”

Pressed by a reporter on what he thinks of the play-calling, Owens repeated a theme he told USA TODAY last week. He said he’s unhappy with the way the media portrays him.

“No I don’t want to answer that,” Owens said. “Because whatever I say, you guys are going to turn it to however you want to say it.”

Buffalo Bills receiver Terrell Owens missed practice Tuesday and is day to day because of a sprained toe.

Bills coach Dick Jauron said it was too early to determine whether Owens would play in Buffalo’s preseason home opener against the Chicago Bears on Saturday.

Owens was not present for the Bills’ morning walk-through session or their night practice during the team’s first day back at training camp since a 21-18 loss to the Tennessee Titans in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday.

With 10 minutes left in the night practice, Owens was spotted leaving a side door of the training facility.

Wearing running shoes and shorts and with a red cap pulled on backward on his head, Owens walked with a slight limp while making his way up the stairs to the players’ dormitories.

Owens jammed his toe during the game Sunday. It’s not clear when or how the injury happened, but Owens was on the field for the entire series, the only one featuring the Bills starters.

He finished with two catches for 27 yards.

Two catches, 27 yards and two first downs

That was the total output by wide receiver Terrell Owens on Sunday night. The outing was short, but it showed what he could do for the Buffalo Bills’ offense when the games mean something.

Owens played just one series, hardly enough time for fans to feast on. But his 16-yard catch on a quick slant and a toe-tapping 11-yard grab near the Titans’ sideline was a small taste of what they can expect.

“It’s football,” Owens said. “This is my 14th season, so a ball is a ball when it comes to me. It’s all about me making the catch and as an offense moving the team.”

The Bills made the move to get Owens because of his extensive resume of catches, yards and touchdowns. They also got him for his ability to take double coverage off Lee Evans.

Just as important, his presence has helped make others around him better.

“He’s raising the level of the guys around us,” quarterback Trent Edwards said. “I like the way Lee Evans is running now, I like the way Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish are running well, and I think a lot of that has to do with the way Terrell plays. He brings that style that can raise every guy’s game, and I think he’s doing that so far.”
