Sometimes you have to believe that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would just like to shut off the alarm, roll over and hope that when he wakes up it will all be a dream.

Another day, another problem.

The news that the Raiders will investigate coach Tom Cable after past domestic abuse allegations have come to light, has to have driven the commish to the medicine cabinet for some headache powders.

Cable, who was not charged after an altercation with an assistant coach earlier this year, admits that he struck his first wife Sandy but says that was 20 years ago. A former girlfriend has also made allegations concerning Cable. (Photo by Jason O. Watson, US Presswire)

The team’s statement:

“In conjunction with the league office, we will undertake a serious evaluation of this matter. We wish to be clear that we do not in any way condone or accept actions such as those alleged. There have been occasions on which we have dismissed Raider employees for having engaged in inappropriate conduct.”

While the team is investigating, officials made it clear that the Raiders are not happy with ESPN reports on Cable.

The team’s statement that appeared in the Contra Costa Times:

“ESPN’s role in this matter must be carefully examined. ESPN routinely disseminates falsehoods about the Raiders. During the last year, ESPN (working with someone who was in this organization) engaged in a calculated effort to distort the truth about the Raiders, utilizing lies and innuendo.”

When Cable was asked about his future he said “I’m coaching the Raiders, and I think my future is to be the coach of the Raiders.”

In separate interviews with ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” Sandy Cable and Marie Lutz say that Cable hit them during relationships dating back more than 20 years.

Cable’s alleged temper has been in the news since August, when Oakland assistant coach Randy Hanson accused Cable of breaking his jaw during an altercation in a coaches meeting.

On Oct. 22, Napa County district attorney Gary Lieberstein said he would not pursue charges against Cable, citing inconsistencies in Hanson’s story that were not corroborated by the three assistants in the room at the time.

But the two women interviewed by “Outside The Lines” say that Cable, in his first full season as the Raiders’ head coach, physically abused them at various times during their relationships.

Tom Cable went on the defensive Tuesday and the NFL said it would investigate reports that the Oakland Raiders coach got into a fight that sent one of his assistants to the hospital.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is looking into the situation to try to determine the facts of what happened.

A day after calling it “an internal issue that we are dealing with,” Cable denied anything transpired at all with defensive assistant Randy Hanson earlier this month. Cable allegedly punched Hanson in the jaw.

“Nothing happened,” Cable told a large swarm of reporters Tuesday when asked about it following a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers. “Listen, you want to talk about this football team and the players on this football team, I’ll talk all day. Otherwise, I’m not getting into it.”

A report filed with the Napa Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old Raiders assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders coaching staff on Aug. 5.

AOL Fanhouse reported that Cable was the coach who caused the injury.
